Car Park A: Hosts an impressive 1.58 megawatt (MW) solar system. Picture 3,402 solar panels working tirelessly to convert photons into clean energy.
The Social Quarter: Boasts its own solar prowess. With 438 solar panels, it generates 200 kilowatts (kW) of electricity.
Chadstone Place: A 440kW photovoltaic array on the roof of the Officeworks car park adjacent to Chadstone Place has boosted the building’s energy performance by more than 30%. The solar panels generate the equivalent energy to that consumed by 336 average Australian homes over a year.
The Market Pavilion: Upon completion will showcase a 740 kW solar system. Picture 1,690 panels capturing energy from dawn till dusk. It’s more than a pavilion; it’s a testament to progress.
When all developments are complete, Chadstone’s solar ensemble will generate enough energy to power over 720 average households each year. That’s 6,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per household.
Chadstone has 6 stormwater harvesting points on site with a total storage of 790,260 litres.
Chadstone collects rainwater from these harvesting points for various uses:
Pressure Washing: Keeping the floors and walkways pristine.
Fire Sprinkler Testing: Ensuring safety without wasting precious water.
Landscape Irrigation: Nourishing the greenery that graces the shopping precinct.
Amenities: From public restrooms to drinking fountains, every drop counts.
Fun Fact: Did you know that beneath the elegant design of the water canopies lies a whopping 380,500 litres of water storage? To put it in perspective that's equivalent to 1,852,357 600ml water bottles.
Chadstone Place: A rainwater tank at Chadstone Place collects 3000kL of water each year which is shared across the precinct.
Chadstone takes a proactive approach by installing water meters for heavy user tenants. Whether it’s a sprawling boutique or a bustling café, these meters track water consumption. It’s not just about the numbers; it’s about behaviour change. When tenants see their water usage quantified, they become conscious of their impact.
Irrigation Management
The lush garden beds at Chadstone owe their vibrancy to smart technology. Landscape irrigation valves connect to three weather stations.
Weather Forecast Integration: The system checks weather predictions—rainfall, temperature, and humidity. Based on the forecast, the valves adjust watering schedules. No need to water during a downpour. By optimising irrigation, Chadstone estimates a 25% reduction in water usage. That’s a win for both the environment and the bottom line.
Waste Compactors: Chadstone recently invested in new compactors for general waste. They come with swipe access, allowing precise monitoring of usage including which retailers generate the most waste and who needs a gentle nudge toward recycling.
Diversion Rate: Currently, Chadstone boasts an impressive 51.19% diversion rate, meaning waste diverted from landfill has the opportunity to find a new purpose through recycling and composting.
Annual Waste: Chadstone generates approx. 5,000 tonnes of waste per year (landfill & diverted waste). If all this waste was going to landfill it would generate 6,500 tonnes of Greenhouse Gases. Waste to landfill generates approx. 3,000 to of Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Therefore, our diversion of waste from landfill removes approx. 760 cars from the road.
Educating for Change: Chadstone collaborates with waste management service providers to run targeted education programs. These programs empower everyone to be part of the solution.
Development: Chadstone's Development in May 2024 boasts an impressive 98.37% project recycling rate on construction material including concrete, steel and glass, etc. That's an impressive 5,432,871 kg of recycled weight.
Chadstone Place: Upgrading Chadstone Place meant 88% of the building, by net lettable area, could be reused. Furthermore, 90% of all construction waste during the retrofit was diverted from landfill.

Picture this, 1,200+ trees standing tall amidst the concrete and glass. Each tree is a silent warrior, enhancing local biodiversity and helping reduce our carbon footprint. Chadstone’s leafy residents are on a mission to cleanse the air, one breath at a time.
Fun Fact: On average, one tree produces about 118 kilograms of oxygen each year. If we assume that each of the 1,200 trees produces at this average rate, the total oxygen produced by 1,200 trees per year is approximately 141,600 kilograms.
To relate this to human needs, consider that an average person requires approximately 550 litres of oxygen daily. The estimated oxygen production of 1,200 trees would be sufficient for approximately 4,019 people (assuming daily needs).
Chadstone Place: Around 640 indoor plants improve the indoor environment quality, and a 60% increase in landscaping offers green views from every vantage point of the tenancy.
This Autumn, Chadstone shoppers had the opportunity to 'Recycle and Be Rewarded'. By donating pre-loved garments, customers had the chance to win a share of over $100,000 worth of prizes. All donated garments were recycled by UPPAREL, Chadstone’s textile recycling partner.
The campaign was a huge success, preventing 1,296 kg of textiles from being sent to landfills, which in turn prevented 4,536 kg of greenhouse gases from polluting our atmosphere. Beyond environmental impact, the campaign also educated customers and promoted a positive message: items that would have been discarded now have a new lease on life.
